Export chat not showing in WhatsApp

Why the option is missing or the export comes out incomplete, and what to try for each cause.

Export chat sits in a different place on each device: Android has it under ⋮ › More, iPhone in the contact's or group's info screen, WhatsApp Web under the chat's ⋮ menu. If it isn't there, or the file comes out short, one of the causes below is almost always the reason.

Why the Export chat option is missing

  1. Restricted chat is on

When Restricted chat is on, people in that chat can't export it, can't save its media to their gallery automatically and can't use linked devices for it. It replaces Advanced chat privacy, and chats that had the old setting keep it until someone upgrades them.

In a one-to-one chat either person can turn it on; in a group, the admins.

    What to do

Ask whoever turned it on to switch it off. In a one-to-one chat it's under ⋮ › View contact › Restricted chat; in a group, in the group's info. It can only be changed from the main phone, not from WhatsApp Web.

  2. You're using the Windows app

WhatsApp's Help Center says the export isn't available on Windows.

    What to do

Open the same chat in WhatsApp Web in a browser, or on the phone.

  3. You're looking in the wrong menu

On iPhone, the chat's screen has no ⋮ menu: Export chat is in the contact or group info, reached by tapping the name at the top.

    What to do

Tap the name, scroll down to Export chat.

When the export is incomplete

  1. The chat is very long

Until 2021 WhatsApp's FAQ gave a limit: the latest 10,000 messages with media, 40,000 without, “due to maximum email sizes”. The current article states no limit.

    What to do

Export without media. On WhatsApp Web, export in parts with Custom date range. The parts can go into one PDF, each as its own section with its own numbering.

  2. Photos or voice notes are missing

Android attaches only the most recent media; the Web export has no media at all.

    What to do

Export from the phone with Include media (iPhone: With all media). Keep the original files for anything the export leaves out.

  3. Some messages never appear

View once messages are never exported, and disappearing messages are gone once their timer runs out. The Web export skips disappearing messages too.

    What to do

Nothing brings these back. If they matter, note what you saw, when, and who else saw it.

  4. A message shows as deleted

A message deleted for everyone appears only as a placeholder line with its time and sender.

    What to do

The original text isn't in the phone's chat any more, so it can't be in the export either.

If you still can't export

  • Try WhatsApp WebIt exports with a date range and works when the phone's export struggles with a huge chat.
  • Ask another participantEveryone in a chat has the same Export chat, unless Restricted chat is on, which blocks it for all of them.
  • Screenshots as a last resortThey show what's on screen and nothing more. Take them in order, without gaps, and keep the phone.
  • Then make the PDFOnce you have the file, the tool numbers every message and records the export's SHA-256 hash.

Questions

Why can I export one chat but not another?

Restricted chat is set per chat, so it can be on in one conversation and off in the rest.

Does Restricted chat also block screenshots?

WhatsApp's article lists saving media to the gallery, exporting, Meta AI features and linked devices. It says nothing about screenshots.

Can I export a chat from WhatsApp Web now?

Yes. Click ⋮ › Export chat, choose All messages or Custom date range, then Export. The .zip has no media.

How do I open the exported file?

Unzip the .zip: the conversation is the .txt inside (_chat.txt on iPhone). Any text editor opens it, or drop the .zip on the home page to read it as numbered pages.

Can I get a chat out of a Google Drive or iCloud backup?

Not as a readable file. Backups are for restoring WhatsApp; the export is something else, a text file that can't even be re-imported. Restore the backup on a phone, then export the chat.
