How to export a WhatsApp chat

WhatsApp's own Export chat writes the conversation to a file, one chat at a time. On a phone it takes three taps.

  1. 1Open the chat and tap ⋮ › More › Export chat.

  2. 2Pick Include media for photos and voice notes, or Without media if the text is enough. With media, WhatsApp attaches the most recent files.

  3. 3Save the file on your phone or send it to yourself, then choose it in the box above.

  1. 1Open the chat and tap the contact's or group's name at the top.

  2. 2Tap Export chat and pick With all media or Without media. You get a .zip.

  3. 3Choose Save to Files, then pick it above with “Choose the files”.

Once the file is in the box, the page reads the chat, computes the hashes and lays out the pages. A chat of a few hundred messages takes seconds. You can drop several exports at once, one file per chat.

What's in the PDF

A number and a hash let anyone point at one message and check that it came from your export, even on a printed page.

On every messageSo it can be cited exactly

  • The original numberingMessage 214 is message 214 of the file. If you keep only some parts, the PDF says which numbers are left out.
  • Date and time as the phone wrote themWith a heading for each day. Times keep the phone's time zone and are not rounded.

People and photosAs they came out of the chat

  • Who sent each messageYou choose how your own name appears, and you can mask other people's phone numbers.
  • Photos on the pageJPEG photos go in byte for byte, with their file name and hash.

For checkingEven on a loose page

  • SHA-256 hashesOf the exported file, of the chat's text and of every attachment. Change a single character and the hash no longer matches.
  • “Page x of y” on every sheetAnd the export's hash in every footer, so a loose page still says which file it came from.

Online converters do the job of the third column too, but they ask you to upload the chat first. Here the file stays in your browser.

Can a WhatsApp chat be used as evidence?

The PDF organizes and documents the conversation. It doesn't certify it.

Privacy and big exports

  • The chat stays on your deviceThe page reads the file in your browser and writes the PDF right there. To check, choose the file, turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data, and make the PDF: it still works.
  • On a phone, export without mediaPhone browsers have little memory. If the .zip is heavy, export “Without media”, pick a period, or use a computer. Photos that don't fit are listed with their hash.

Questions

Does the other person know when I export a chat?

WhatsApp's export instructions mention no notice to the other people in the chat, and the file is made on your own phone. What happens next depends on where you send it.

Does exporting a chat delete it?

No. The export is a copy; the chat stays in WhatsApp as it was.

Can I export only certain dates?

On WhatsApp Web, yes: choose Custom date range before you export. The phone apps export the whole chat; in the tool you can then keep a period or a range of message numbers, and every message keeps its original number.

Can I put several chats in one PDF?

Yes. WhatsApp exports one chat at a time, so export each chat you need and drop all the files here together. Then choose one PDF with every chat (a contents page first, then each chat in its own section with its own numbering and hash) or one PDF per chat, which you can download one by one or together as a .zip.

Is my chat uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens in your device's browser. The page only counts anonymous steps such as “PDF made”, never names, messages or files.

Can I use the PDF as evidence in court?

You can usually file it, and the court weighs it with everything else. If the other side disputes the chat, you may need to prove it's genuine, often with a forensic report. Ask your lawyer what your court expects.
