How to print a WhatsApp chat

The whole conversation on paper, with each message's number, date and time.

WhatsApp has no Print button. It can export a conversation to a file, though, and a file can be laid out as pages. The route below works from Android, iPhone or a computer, keeps every message in order and gives each one a number you can refer to on paper.

For three or four messages, a screenshot is quicker. For a whole conversation, or anything a lawyer, a landlord or an employer will read, print the export.

Print a WhatsApp chat in three steps

Export on the phone, make the PDF in your browser, then print it like any other document.

  1. 1In the chat, tap ⋮ › More › Export chat.

  2. 2Pick Include media if the photos should be on paper too.

  3. 3Save the file where you can find it, for example in Downloads or by emailing it to yourself.

  1. 1Tap the contact's or group's name at the top of the chat.

  2. 2Tap Export chat and choose With all media if the photos should be printed.

  3. 3Choose Save to Files. The export is a .zip.

  • Make the PDFOpen the tool, choose the file and pick Letter or A4. Every message gets its number, a heading for each day and “page x of y” in the footer. The pages show on screen before you download anything.
  • Print itOn a computer, open the PDF and press Ctrl+P (⌘P on a Mac). On a phone, open the PDF and choose Print from the share menu or the ⋮ menu; iPhones print to AirPrint printers from there.

Print a WhatsApp chat from a computer

If the chat lives on your laptop through WhatsApp Web, you can export it there.

  • Export from WhatsApp WebOpen the chat, click ⋮ › Export chat, then Export. The download is a .zip.
  • Only the dates you needWhatsApp Web asks for All messages or a Custom date range, which saves paper on a long chat.
  • No photos from the WebThe Web export is text only. If the photos matter, export from the phone with media instead.
  • Not from the Windows appThe Windows app has no Export chat. Use the browser version.

Print part of a chat, or print it with photos

  • A period or a range of messagesChoose dates or type message numbers such as 120-180. The printed messages keep their original numbers, and the PDF names the numbers it left out, so nobody can say the excerpt hides a gap.
  • Photos where they were sentJPEG photos print beside their message, at their original quality, with file name and hash. Videos and voice notes are listed by name, size and hash.
  • Other people's numbersGroup chats show numbers of people you haven't saved. Mask them before printing and only the country code and the last two digits stay visible.
  • Black and white is fineThe pages are black and grey on white. A colour printer only changes the photos.

Printing a chat for court or a lawyer

Paper is easy to read and easy to doubt. Bring what lets someone check it.

  • The printed PDFComplete if you can, so the context is there. If you print excerpts, the PDF lists the missing numbers.
  • The original export fileThe .zip or .txt exactly as WhatsApp wrote it. Its SHA-256 hash is on the cover of the printout, so anyone can confirm the pages came from that file.
  • The phoneDon't delete the chat or uninstall WhatsApp. If the other side disputes the messages, an expert may need to see the device.
  • Voice notes, written outA printout can't play audio. Keep the audio files and add a transcript of the ones that matter.

The printout documents the conversation; it doesn't certify it. If authenticity may be challenged, ask your lawyer about a notary's record or a forensic report. More on that on the home page.

Questions

Can I print a WhatsApp chat as it looks on the phone, with bubbles?

Only with screenshots. The PDF lists one message per row with its number, sender, date and time, which fits far more on a page and keeps the date on every message.

Can I print a whole WhatsApp conversation?

Yes. The export holds the entire chat unless someone turned on Restricted chat, which blocks exporting for everyone in it.

How many pages will it be?

It depends on the chat and the photos. The tool shows every page before you download, with the page count, so you can pick a period first if it's too long.

Can I print from an iPhone without a computer?

Yes. Export the chat to Files, make the PDF here in Safari, open it and choose Share › Print.

Do emoji print?

They print as their Unicode codes in grey brackets, such as [U+1F602], because the PDF's font has no emoji drawings. The text stays complete.
